چکیده

In this paper we study the simultaneous problems of food waste and hunger in the context of the possible solution of food (waste) rescue and redistribution. To this end, we develop an empirical model that can be used in Monte Carlo simulations to study the dynamics of the underlying problem. Our model’s parameters are derived from a unique data set provided by a large food bank and food rescue organization in north central Colorado. We find that food supply is a non-parametric heavytailed process that is well-modeled with an extreme value peaks-over-threshold model. Although the underlying process is stochastic, the basic approach of food rescue and redistribution appears to be feasible both at small and large scales. The ultimate efficacy of this approach is intimately tied to the rate at which food expires and hence the ability to preserve and quickly transport and redistribute food. The cost of the redistribution is tied to the number and density of participating suppliers, and costs can be reduced (and supply increased) simply by recruiting additional donors to participate. Our results show that with sufficient funding and manpower, a significant amount of food can be rescued from the waste stream and used to feed the hungry.

Automated Analysis of Pressure Build up Tests Affected by Phase Redistribution

Analytical Solutions and type curves for the constant rate radial flow of fluid in both conventional and naturally fractured reservoirs including the effect of wellbore phase redistribution are presented. An automated procedure for non-linear least square minimization using the analytical solutions and their derivatives with respect to the unknown parameters developed to analyze the pressur...

Charity Starts ... at Work? Conceptual Foundations for Research with Businesses that Donate to Food Redistribution Organisations

As global concern about sustainability, food waste, and poverty increases, there is an urgent need to understand what motivates businesses to adopt pro-social and pro-environmental behaviours. This paper suggests that food redistribution organisations hold both pro-social and pro-environmental aims, due to their concern with reducing food surplus and food insecurity. To achieve this, they must ...

The Second Life of Food: An Assessment of the Social Impact of Food Redistribution Activities in Emilia Romagna, Italy

The increased relative poverty and migration crisis in Europe are determining a raise of food insecurity levels. Cities and regions are experiencing—and to some extent stimulating—a growth of food recovery initiatives. Food redistribution activities (FRAs) are acknowledged as a tool for addressing food insecurity and preventing food surplus wastage ensuring economic, environmental, and social b...
